VOICE - General Meeting for 2003-09-20

12:00:36 <WalterOS2> This meeting of VOICE is now in session.
<WalterOS2> Bill, will you be taking the log?
<wdl> Walter: Yes. In Progress...
<WalterOS2> Thx
<WalterOS2> If more people don't show up, we'll have to call off the meeting. :-(
<KenKrchnr> I'm here, but on the phone for the next few minutes.
<WalterOS2> OK
<PsiFire> trying to drum up some more people
<WalterOS2> Good. Thanks!
<PsiFire> how many more do we need?
<wdl> R-S: You'll have found that I sent you the wrong version(s) of my "cleaned-up" logs? Still had dates/times. I'll send the right ones later.
<WalterOS2> There's no specific number, but more than just the Pres and Acting Secretary would be nice. :-)
<WalterOS2> I don't know if R-S is around.
<WalterOS2> Maybe he's out on the beach. :-)
<WalterOS2> The Adenga is at http://www.os2voice.org/Agendas/voice_2003-09-20.html
<WalterOS2> make that Agenda. :-)
<WalterOS2> Agenda Section A: New Business
<WalterOS2> Let's try again.
<WalterOS2> Agenda Section A: Old Business
<WalterOS2> (My printer is offline, and so I don't have a copy right beside me.)
<WalterOS2> Item 1. Add my name and info to "Help Desk"
<WalterOS2> Roderick: Did you and Jeremy work out where you were going to put the telephone support info?
<eCSNL> Not yet...
<eCSNL> Well I discussed it with him
<eCSNL> to put it under section helpdesk...
<WalterOS2> OK: I just send him an email to remind him of the meeting.
<Rat-Salad> wdl: I did get the logs
<WalterOS2> Also, I need to send him my info.
<WalterOS2> :-)
<Rat-Salad> I apologize, I have been busy lately
<WalterOS2> Hello Jeremy: You didn't say anything.
<Rat-Salad> I actually have a list of things people have asked me to do
<WalterOS2> Wow! That's amazing; I think. :-)
<WalterOS2> VOICE people, or other people?
<Rat-Salad> VOICE people
<Rat-Salad> and others
<Rat-Salad> hehe
<WalterOS2> How's "this olde house" coming along?
<WalterOS2> Do you know that song?
<Rat-Salad> ohh disaster :)
<WalterOS2> What's wrong now?
<WalterOS2> or still wrong?
<Rat-Salad> have to rebuild the toilet, replace the faucets, for starters.... and I have absolutely no experience :)
<KenKrchnr> Well, you will :-)
<WalterOS2> Do you have a "Home Depot" store near you?
<Rat-Salad> yep
<WalterOS2> Well, they'll be good for a lot of advice, and their prices aren't too bad either.
<PsiFire> is there a list of the board members on the VOICE site?
<Rat-Salad> yes there is... http://www.os2voice.org/membership.html
<WalterOS2> Their people are pretty knowledgeable. Although I prefer the Building Box myself.
<WalterOS2> Yes, but it's not quite up-to-date. It's at http://www.os2voice.org/membership.html
<Rat-Salad> I need to remove Vaughn correct?
<WalterOS2> Jeremy: Bill's name should go up as Acting Secretary and Vaughn's name should be removed.
<Rat-Salad> right
<wdl> Jeremy: (...said with great terror...) NOT with email addresses in the clear, I hope!!
<PsiFire> thasnks walter
<WalterOS2> Normally, the names are clickable to an email address.
<WalterOS2> However, you could use a web page instead, I guess. That way you'd be protected from spammers, but people who needed to could find you.
<PsiFire> how do you mask the emails with a seperate webpage?
<WalterOS2> A personal web page, I mean.
<PsiFire> ah
<wdl> WalterOS2: Webpage would be fine. Mine with email address is anti-'botted. Is that a word, I wonder?
<PsiFire> how do you antibot an email address?
<WalterOS2> One of the great things about English is that you can make up words as you go along. :-)
<wdl> PsiFire: I embed a tiny graphic in the URL. Swipeable, but not clickable or readable by 'bots. I hope...!
<WalterOS2> Bill: So the email address on the VOICE web page would be clickable, right?
<wdl> WalterOS2: Oh, I hope *not*!
<PsiFire> wdl: so in order to email you they have to enter the address manually?
<WalterOS2> I'm the President of VOICE, and honestly I don't get much, if any, spam from my VOICE email address. I get lots, but its from other places.
<wdl> PsiFire: If it's shown "my way", it can be cut/pasted. But no, not 'clickable'.
<PsiFire> how do you cut and paste a graphic?
<wdl> PsiFire: Doing a cut/paste from my webpage, the graphic and underlying code isn't carried over. Just the email address. It works with Mozilla, at least.
<PsiFire> hmmm....interesting
<PsiFire> what did you do to achieve that?
<PsiFire> I'd be interested in using the process for my own web pages
<PsiFire> as i can't stand spam
<PsiFire> thankfully, so far we recieve little if any
<WalterOS2> wdl: Here's my proposed scheme: instead of "mailto:wdl....com", you put "http:www.wdl.....com" Now that clicks to your web site, where a person could browse around and locate your email address. Howevever, since your web site is "anti-botted", a bot could not browse your site and locate your email address.
<WalterOS2> wdl: Would that work for you?
<PsiFire> WalterOS2: makes it inconvienet for someone to have to "Search" around for an email address
<PsiFire> could you not just anitbot the email address on the VOICE site the same way he does it on his own site?
<wdl> WalterOS2 & PsiFire: Look at http://pws.prserv.net/wdl/wd-email.htm, which would be the URL to post.
<PsiFire> interesting
<PsiFire> how did you prevent the little graphic from being copied along with the text?
<PsiFire> or is that mozilla's defauly behavior?
<wdl> PsiFire: Just works that way. Dunno why/how. I 'spose one day it *won't* work, as browsers change. But it's my little try at protection.
<WalterOS2> OK, post that URL on the VOICE web site.
<Rat-Salad> ahh I'm glad I have spam tagging on my mail server
<WalterOS2> There are two basic ways of dealing with or cutting down on spam.
<Rat-Salad> it's about 95% accurate
<WalterOS2> a) Making it hard on everyone who wants to contact you--even your friends;
<WalterOS2> and
<PsiFire> wdl: seems to work well in IEEeeeeee as well
<wdl> PsiFire: Good to know! Thanks.
<PsiFire> what does ABMG stand for?
<PsiFire> welcome
<WalterOS2> b) Attempting to differentiate between the spam and the good mail and trashing the former.
<wdl> PsiFire: American Board of Medical Genetics.
<WalterOS2> I'm seeing more and more of the former, and it bothers me because I don't like being treating the same way as a spammer.
<PsiFire> ah
<WalterOS2> R-S: I will get you my information for the VOICE "telephone support" area asap.
<wdl> WalterOS2: *Three* ways to cut down on... I use both my ISP's filter, and the Bayesian filter in Mozilla. Then ALSO, I use "permissive" filtering. My friends go directly into a special folder - before spam-filtering.
<wdl> ... and then I aim the Bayesian filter at that folder.
<wdl> ...works for me. Sorta.
<WalterOS2> Section B: New Business
<WalterOS2> 1. Treasurer's Report.
<WalterOS2> Unavailable--I emailed Peter on Thur and he didn't respond. Guess he's still sick. :-(
<WalterOS2> We have to find a way to arrange for Bill to have access to the books and the bank account for cases like this and for the springs and summers.
<WalterOS2> I just don't know how to go about it. Any ideas??
<WalterOS2> We authorized a $750 gift to Warpstock, but how do we pay it to them?
<PsiFire> check? :->
<WalterOS2> Peter's got the checkbook. :-( Maybe we can find another VOICE user who doesn't live too far away.
<Rat-Salad> send Mark an e-mail about it
<WalterOS2> Sounds like a good idea, although I'm not sure why. :-)
<WalterOS2> Roderick's not here, or I would ask him for Peter phone numbers.
<WalterOS2> I'll email him and ask him for them.
<WalterOS2> Moving right along.
<WalterOS2> Item B2. In case anyone isn't aware, wdl (Bill Loughman) has been appointed Acting Secretary, until the next election.
<WalterOS2> Send an encrypted email to him and he *might* give you his email address.
<WalterOS2> He might even send the key to decrypt it as well. :-)
<PsiFire> hehe
<WalterOS2> Item B3: Warpstock Report
<WalterOS2> Is Mark here?
<PsiFire> he'll encrypt it with genomic nomenclature...then we're all screwed
<WalterOS2> Yeah--how long does it take a Cray to do one of those, anyway?
<WalterOS2> :-)
<WalterOS2> Item B4: Warpdoctor Report
<WalterOS2> Doug isn't here, however most of the basic engine and infrastructure is built from what I understand.
<WalterOS2> Doug is having some problems with the WarpDoctor plugin with certain browsers.
<WalterOS2> He had me doing some testing during the week, and he made some progress. Here's what he learmed:
<WalterOS2> The problem with Mozilla v 1.5b is that the Mozilla folks suddenly
<WalterOS2> decided that the MIME-Type registered by the plug-in isn't what Mozilla
<WalterOS2> should send to the plug-in. So for example, when starting the
<WalterOS2> WarpDoctor site application the MIME-Type should be (and is for all
<WalterOS2> browsers execpt Mozilla v 1.5b)
<WalterOS2> x-warpdoctor/drrexx.
<WalterOS2> Mozilla v 1.5b sends
<WalterOS2> application/x-warpdoctor/drrexx
<WalterOS2> I guess some Mozilla developer thought it should now work this way -
<WalterOS2> which probably breaks a lot of plug-ins. I suspect that this change
<WalterOS2> occurred sometime after v 1.4a that I have, and before v 1.4 that you
<WalterOS2> have, but I will need your debug output to confirm that.
<WalterOS2> Isn't it fun when developers of a widely used program change the specs and don't tell anyone?
<WalterOS2> The last line was mine: not Doug's
<WalterOS2> I believe he mentioned that this same problem could be affecting Fireball.
<WalterOS2> Any comments, questions,,,,?
<WalterOS2> I can pass them along to Doug if you like?
<Rat-Salad> ahh
<WalterOS2> ahh?
<Rat-Salad> I don't know... just reading
<WalterOS2> OK
<Rat-Salad> I have nothing to add
<WalterOS2> Anyone else?
<WalterOS2> OK, continuing to move along.
<WalterOS2> Item B5: VOICE web site Report
<WalterOS2> Jeremy, now it's turn. What's happening with your redesign of the web site?
<Rat-Salad> I need to do a few things to the VOICE website when I get the time
<Rat-Salad> I need to add the WarpStock banner to show our support
<WalterOS2> Such as?
<Rat-Salad> I also need to update membership, and the logs
<WalterOS2> Are you still planning on giving the front page a new look?
<Rat-Salad> sure I will... I just need to sit down with a graphics app and come up with something creative
<WalterOS2> Jeremy?
<Rat-Salad> creativity is my problem right now... I feel drained and burnt out
<WalterOS2> OK, well I certainly don't want you to get burned out. Go and lie on the beach with Chrissy, or read a good book.... :-)
<WalterOS2> I find reading a really nice change.
<Rat-Salad> hehe I mean.. I'm sorry to say that I feel that way
<WalterOS2> The web site will still be here when you come back. :-)
<WalterOS2> That's OK, we understand.
<WalterOS2> Item B6:For the next item of business,
<WalterOS2> We need a motion to elect someone for a new (non-board) position.
<WalterOS2> Bill has agreed to stand as Assistant Treasurer, as we mentioned earlier.
<WalterOS2> But we need a motion to make it official.
<wdl> WalterOS2: I *did*???
<WalterOS2> The motion needs to cover creating a new position and the nominating of Bill.
<PsiFire> he sounds surprised....:->
<WalterOS2> wdl: Yes, in the last board meeting. However let's table this until you and I have talked about it more if you feel uncomfortable about it.
<WalterOS2> :-)
<wdl> WalterOS2: I suppose I could do it... Not really a problem.
<KenKrchnr> Motion to create a new position of Assistant Treasurer.
<PsiFire> a new non-board position
<wdl> WalterOS2: Really *gotta* read the logs. ;-)
<PsiFire> maybe will was drunk at the time? :->
<wdl> PSiFire: Don't drink...
<wdl> PSIFire: ...but do daydream a lot... <g>
<WalterOS2> wdl: Here's an excerpt from the last (actually the BOD) log:
<WalterOS2> 09-06-103 15:09:33 <WalterOS2> If you want more responsibilty, we can always talk about assistant Treasurer. We need one badly.
<WalterOS2> 09-06-103 15:10:13 <wdl> WalterOS2: Me???
<WalterOS2> 09-06-103 15:10:44 <Rat-Salad> one of your job requirements is editing the log.. remove all the irrelivant comments
<WalterOS2> 09-06-103 15:10:47 <WalterOS2> It's a backup for the times Peter is down--like now he is ill and off the Internet.
<WalterOS2> 09-06-103 15:11:13 <WalterOS2> But it's up to you. Let's talk about it later.
<WalterOS2> 09-06-103 15:11:57 <wdl> WalterOS2: I'm willing. Would need to be shown the ropes. Talk later is fine.
<WalterOS2> 09-06-103 15:12:08 <WalterOS2> Great.
<WalterOS2> Sorry for the mess: it's not editted.
<WalterOS2> wdl: Are you OK for this continue? I don't want to pressure you.
<wdl> WalterOS2: Yeah, I just looked at it myself. OK - cool. In for a penny, in for a pound.
<WalterOS2> :-)
<WalterOS2> Ken: Would you like to amend the motion to include the phrase non-board?
<KenKrchnr> Motion to create a new non-board position of Assistant Treasurer.
<WalterOS2> Thx.
<WalterOS2> Is there a second for this motion?
<wdl> Oh hell - second.
<WalterOS2> Is there any discussion about this motion to create a new position of Assistant Treasurer?
<Rat-Salad> I second that
<wdl> Hehe - California-style: Create and elect in one swell foop.
<WalterOS2> I'll start by making one comment. Peter has been our Treasurer practically since VOICE began, and the creation of this position
<Rat-Salad> it will help, since Peter is pretty busy now I understand
<WalterOS2> in no reflects our appreciation or his importance to VOICE.
<WalterOS2> But there are times, when Peter is offline, and we need someone to fill for him during those times.
<WalterOS2> Jeremy: my understanding was that Peter is ill.
<WalterOS2> ?
<Rat-Salad> hmmm... I thought I heard that he got a new job
<WalterOS2> Maybe he's catching up after being ill for so long.
<WalterOS2> Oh. I've not heard that. I'll try to phone him this week.
<Rat-Salad> I could be wrong... I haven't exactly been.. all here lately :)
<WalterOS2> Any further discussion regarding the motion?
<WalterOS2> All those in favour of passing this motion, please type Aye.
<KenKrchnr> Aye
<Rat-Salad> aye
<wdl> Aye'spose
<WalterOS2> All those opposed to the motion, please type Nay.
<WalterOS2> The motion is carried.
<WalterOS2> We'll table the appointment/election until the next meeting.
<WalterOS2> OK, does anyone want to make a motion to adjourn the meeting?
<wdl> On principle, I need to advise of my projected absences:
<wdl> Weekends of Sept.4-5 2003 and Oct 18-19 2003 (Warpstock); and Nov 22- Dec 14 2003 --inclusive.
<WalterOS2> OK, thanks. Would you mind emailing them to me? They won't get as lost as easily that way. :-)
<wdl> Ulp! *October 4-5 2003!
<WalterOS2> :-)
<Rat-Salad> WalterOS2: how's the new router doing? ;)
<wdl> WalterOS2: OK, will email as well.
<WalterOS2> Jeremy: I'm having trouble printing with it. :-(
<Rat-Salad> ahh, configuration issue?
<WalterOS2> Is there a motion to adjourn???
* Rat-Salad moves
<wdl> Second.
<WalterOS2> All in favour of adjourning, please type Aye.
<Rat-Salad> aye
<KenKrchnr> aye
<wdl> Aye.
<WalterOS2> wdl: The motion to adjourn does have a second. Don't ask me why, though.
<WalterOS2> The motion is carried.
<WalterOS2> The meeting is adjourned.
