I finally got NetBeans up and running under OS/2. For those of you who don't know, Netbeans is the "bleeding edge" open-source version of Sun Forte; the Java editor. While there are still issues to be worked out, this is a first step and I hope others will step in and aid me in working out the quirks.

I've uploaded the required scripts to Hobbes with the filename "netbeans31-16.zip"

IBM posted new Java 1.1.8 fixes on November 23. Build date is 11-21-2000. The new fixes may be downloaded from either of the two following IBM ftp sites:

ftp://ncc.hursley.ibm.com/pub/java/fixes/os2/11/118/
ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/software/java/fixes/os2/11/118/

Updates include new runtime.exe, samples.exe and toolkit.exe, plus the usual read.me and fixes.lst. Two additional files, os2jre.exe and rmi-iiop-toolkit.exe are also available.

As of Nov 26th, the read.me file had still not been updated from Oct 13, but it would be well to review installation instructions contained therein, which have not changed.

After installation, execute "java -fullversion" from an OS/2 command prompt to verify that the update has been successfully installed. You should see the following result:

"JDK 1.1.8 IBM build o118-20001121 (JIT enabled: javax V3.5-IBMJDK1.1-20001121)"

There is new version of the OS/2 PM ICQ client - pwICQ 0.29.

Changes include bugfixes, extended user info support and file transfer.

Also there's two new extensions already uploaded:

rxICQ - Rexx API for pwICQ (change status, query contact info, send message, etc from any Rexx script).

ICQpipe - Plugin to send notifications to any system pipe designed to be used with SYSBar/2 pipe monitor (source code included).

Currently pwICQ is available on hobbes at:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/pwicq029.zip

and later should be available in:

WarpIN and XWorkplace have both been updated to V0.9.6. Both updates are mostly for bugfixing.

1. WarpIN V0.9.6 has been released.

WarpIN is intended to become the new universal OS/2 installer. It is becoming more and more popular among OS/2 developers because of its flexibility and ease of use. It has full system configuration (CONFIG.SYS, WPS classes, WPS objects) and can fully undo all the changes to your system again.

V0.9.6 is mainly a maintenance release. Still, a few new features have been added, such as command-line extraction of archives using WIC.EXE.

2. XWorkplace V0.9.6 is out also.

XWorkplace is the most feature-rich freeware Workplace Shell enhancer on the planet, and even better, it is OpenSource. XWorkplace is the successor to my popular XFolder utility and has become a Netlabs project.

Among many other things, XWorkplace gives you the following features:

Among many other things, XWorkplace gives you the following features:

-- Tons of folder enhancements, such as status bars, freely configurable context menus, global sort options, and much more.

-- Extended file associations, which replace the illogical WPS associations by type and filter separately.

-- Easy CONFIG.SYS management thru a WPS object.

-- A trash can which supports all WPS delete operations.

-- Replacement default icons.

-- Improvements to startup and shutdown: boot logos, a replacement startup folder, a complete rewrite of the OS/2 shutdown sequence (including automatic reboot, APM power-off, and a shutdown folder).

-- Mouse and keyboard enhancements, including sliding focus, sliding menus, global object hotkeys, folder hotkeys, mouse-button-3 scrolling.

-- Enhanced multimedia, such as more system sounds.

V0.9.6 should fix the problems with WarpCenter and XShutdown. Besides, extended file associations work now.

To install XWorkplace, you also need the latest WarpIN.

See my home page for detailed information and download addresses:

http://www2.rz.hu-berlin.de/~h0444vnd/os2.htm

WarpIN and XWorkplace are Netlabs projects, released under the GNU General Public Licence. The source code is available on the Netlabs CVS server. See www.netlabs.org/nosa and my home page for details.

We have created four mailing lists at www.egroups.com:

-- warpin-user
-- warpin-dev
-- xworkplace-user
-- xworkplace-dev

for WarpIn and XWorkplace users and developers, respectively.

We are grateful for feedback on these mailing lists.

Note: If you have linked to the above address of my home page, please update your links to point to www.netlabs.org instead, because my homepage will change in the near future.

Two days ago we announced that the dutch HCC OS/2 Group would maintain a Picture Gallery on Internet during the HCC Computer Fair. During the three days of this great event the picture gallery is maintained on-line.

Due to some problems with out Internet connection, the pictures from the second day (25-11) have been not available for some time. But everything is OK now. If you want to get an impression of one of the largest consumer computer fairs around, please take a look at URL:

has been slowly improving since I started it in May 2000. It is an ongoing project, with more work still being required in the file archive's programming section. The site search, and links are fully operational, and the links section will also be revamped during December.

The site is really meant for us Aussies but is of cause open for everyones us. If anyone knows of any links I haven't included, please let me know, the same goes for any files anyone has hidden away they may like to add to the site.

I have just uploaded the latest release of PMNRDX to hobbes.

PMNRDX is a utility to reindex all folders and newsgroups of a grouplist in StarDocks PMINews, in the case that all articles are lost. Beside some fixes, the main improvement is the possibility to reindex newsgroups as well.

You can find it at

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/pmnrdx108.zip

or later at

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/internet/news/util/pmnrdx108.zip

or on my home page:

It has been a while since I announced any PPWIZARD (freeware) changes but as usual they just keep happening. See this page for more information:

http://www.labyrinth.net.au/~dbareis/ppwizard/changehistory.htm

While people tend to concentrate on PPWIZARD as a html preprocessor it is extremely useful for preprocessing rexx as well, in fact PPWIZARD is a large rexx code which is created by ppwizard! PPWIZARD is also programmable in rexx code.

Some of the recent enhancements are to aid in rexx development. PPWIZARD allows you to easily have "libraries" of rexx routines (or even snippets) and reuse these wherever they are required. It is useful for code reuse and can do heaps more than simple file inclusion.

If you hand code your HTML web site you may also wish to have a look at PPWIZARD. If you use SSI you should still have a look as PPWIZARD can do heaps more. If you hand code you should seriously consider at least using SSI and preferably a preprocessor.

For more information (and to see online examples) on PPWIZARD have a look at:

http://www.labyrinth.net.au/~dbareis/ppwizard.htm
