Two years ago the following web poll was carried out at RU/2 site (http://www.os2.spb.ru): "Which OS/2 version do you use at most?" 16% were using OS/2 Warp 3, 77% -- OS/2 Warp 4, and 7% were using beta version of Aurora. Today we started the same poll (eCS preview included) to see what has changed during past two years. You can vote at:

I have updated my update_homepage rexx-script. A home page visitor asked me to add a date to my pages, so I enhanced my script to do that for me. It gets the date and time of the HTML-file and writes that information in the HTML code before uploading the files to the FTP server. The script, instructions and an example can be found at:

Fixing 16-bit Setup troubles in Odin

At:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/windows/win32inst.zip

there is a file which contains two program components:

1. SETUP.EXE
2. _ISDEL.EXE

Microsoft Windows(TM) 32-bit Installer Components

11/08/2000
[...]

Purpose:

Odin (the successor to the Win32-OS/2 Project) holds much promise for being able to run 32-bit Windows executables in the OS/2 PM environment. One problem which has been routinely reported is that of 16-bit Windows installers shipped with 32-bit Windows apps. Upon running such a SETUP.EXE, OS/2 either immediately launches a Win-OS/2 session or Odin reports an error message that the app is not 32-bit Windows. Replacing both SETUP.EXE and _ISDEL.EXE with the 32-bit versions in this archive should allow these applications to install normally under Odin.

Contents: These files are the 32-bit installer components. Replace any 16-bit installers with these for use under Odin.

We're glad to announce version 1.0 beta 3 of Systray/2!

In this version:
-improved (no, just FULL-REWRITED) unit painting scheme. And now you can change colors for ALL monitor units (clock,swap,disk,etc)!;
-New classes: System uptime and CPU monitor;
-Tray API for Virtual Pascal/2 included.
-New plugin - SOM Agent. Now in alpha-test version. Ask us about it!
-Fixes in plugin docs;
-Fixed bug with configuration saving;
-Fixed bug with configuration notebook on Warp 3;
-other small fixes..

Systray is what we deal with when we work with operating systems Windows '95/98/NT. Actually besides task switcher it is a convenient utility called system tray. Tray is a section of the screen assigned for the programs not seen in the screen at the moment but active and performing an operation which the user can control through the tray. It differs from task switcher in several aspects:

The program that has its icon on the tray manages this icon by itself. The user s manipulations over the program are sent as a message to it and operate it through the pop-up menu. The program gets the mechanism allowing to inform the user about the process of performing an operation. E.g. ReGet, ICQ, The Bat.

How can You help us?

All Systray sources and some documentation (Plugin making reference, System Tray API reference) is included - you are welcome to support YOUR SOFTWARE in system tray.

You may also create new plugins. Please let us know about your plans in this case and we'll include yours plugins into next releases.

Thanks for your interesting! Russian Team OS/2

In the past, using Forte's auto-update feature under OS/2 would fail (the patches would be downloaded but would never be applied). Now, you can make use of the autoupdate feature, but when Forte quits, runs the following command before restarting it. This will cause it to apply the downloaded patchs:

java -classpath lib\updater.jar -Dnetbeans.home=. -Xmx96m org.netbeans.updater.UpdaterFrame

Some of you may have noticed that it has again been difficult or impossible to reach the Emu-OS/2 web site http://emuos2.vintagegaming.com containing the SNES9x, Retrocade, and MAME for OS/2 projects.

Apparently they are still having problems moving from the old, reliable Solaris web server to the new and "improved" server running Win2K. That should be explanation enough for the poor performance and outage. ;-)

I'm going to have a little talk with my buddies at Vintagegaming.com to see if we can do something about this. In the meantime, I have uploaded the latest SNES9x and Retrocade releases to Hobbes tonight. There's no reason that Win2K should stand in the way of OS/2 users getting free OS/2 software. ;-)

The Retrocade update to Alpha 6 includes the following changes:

* Updated to work with SDD beta 35
* Added joystick support for Vesa J's enhanced joystick driver
* Added support for custom video modes - you won't have to add a video mode manually, it will be added on-the-fly as needed

The joystick driver and an up-to-date version of SDDHELP.SYS have been included in the archive for your convenience.

For the time being, until the web site fiasco is resolved, you can get the latest SNES9x and Retrocade versions from Hobbes:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/new/snes9x_132_os2_r5.zip
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/new/retro_alpha6.zip
