DFSee version 5.25 released

Assignment and display of driveletters in DFSee has been enhanced to show LVM-driveletters if different from the 'actual' ones used by the operating system at that point. To accomodate this, the 2nd column of the driveletters that is normally a ':' will show the lowercase 'prefered' LVM driveletter when appropriate. As an example: "Fc" displayed by DFSee would be actual drive F: that LVM would like to see as "C:" but got 'bumped' to F:, perhaps because duplicates exist. (LVM.EXE would show this as "C->F:")

The query command introduced in 5.24 is now even more accessible since "DFSOS2 /QUERY" or "dfsos2 -query" have been added. Or, even simpler, use the new DFSQUERY.BAT or DFSQUERY.CMD!

DFSee is the SWISS-ARMY-KNIFE for disk and filesystem problems. With FDISK-like displays, analysis and recovery, FIX commands, UNDELETE for HPFS/NTFS, imaging and cloning. More details at:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/disk/dfsee525.zip
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/dfsee525.zip

Most important functional changes:

- DFSee Implemented /HELP and /QUERY long-name switches
- DFSQUERY New .BAT and .CMD script to show/log DFSee query
- TxWin Allow '/' and '-' for EXE-level switch character
- PART New -L and -L- options, for prefered drive-letters
- PART Show LVM prefered letters if different from actual
- RESIZE Enhanced 'resulting part' display, fixed select bug
- PART/FAT Fixed 'empty disk' FAT syndrom on LVM created FAT
- SIM/WRIM/WIPE better confirmation text with target description
- CLONE Added source and target sizes to confirmation text
- PL LVM Show CHS value for start and end sector location
- PART/MAP Show LVM/JFS multiple warning for type 35 only
- PART/MAP Changed "WARNING not-formatted" to be a major warning
- Popups Fixed hang on collapsed windows and down-arrow
- WRIM Fixed opening/finding imagefiles larger than 2 GiB
- DFS*.TXT Minor updates to several documentation files

Check DFS*.TXT files for details, all changes listed in DFSHIST.TXT

Registering DFSee will give you the right to use all 5.xx versions and get support plus a reasonable amount of assistance by email. Existing 4.xx registrations can be upgraded to 5.xx as well.

But even more important, it enables further development of DFSee!

Regards, Jan van Wijk

NewView 2.6.4

Greetings,

I've released NewView 2.6.4. My website is refusing updates at the moment so it's not mentioned there.
http://hobbes .nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/misc/NewView2_6_4.zip

Note the change to language files (see below)

NewView is a free replacement for the original OS/2 or eComStation online help system.

Major enhancements are:

- New user interface (split window)
- Select and copy direct from window
- Easy to use global (all files) search
- Remembers size & position
- Most recently used files list
- Smooth scrolling display
- Current topic always highlighted in contents
- Can go forward as well as back in history
- Options for fonts, colors and more
- Annotate help files
- Bookmarks
- Fully resizeable

V2.6.4
Note: please delete your existing Language (.lng) files, unless you have customised them yourself, before installing. This is because the base files have been renamed, and the new files will be ignored in favour of the old ones.

- Fixed online help in lots of apps, broken in V2.5.0 by SmartSuite fix!
- Fixed display of some context help
eg. PMView file dialogs
- Searching by panel name works again
eg. Sibyl keyword lookup
- Fixed occasional crashes when launching online help
- Close help when app exits without explicit help close
eg. Sibyl
- Display first contents topic when online help
- Fixed crash on "Using Help"
- Simplified Product Information dialog,
launch default browser on URL click
- Removed 70kB from NewView.exe
- Fixed inconsistent loading of languages...
- Ignore extra bits in LANG (eg. _EURO)
- Renamed language files to base language only
eg. de_de.lng -> de.lng
since most of them are not region-specific.
- Added French translation
(Thanks Guillaume Gay)
- Spanish, German and Russian translations updated
(Thanks David Mediavilla, Alfredo Fernßndez D az,
Christian Hennecke, Yuri Prokushev)

New mailing list: Building an OS/2 Replacement

I have created a new Yahoo group, OS2TCS-DOC, whose purpose is stated as follows:

The purpose of this group is to prepare detailed documentation for a follow-on to OS/2, to be designed and implemented to meet the requirements of the Department of Defense Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria.

Other OS2TCS-xxx groups will be established in the future as the need arises.

This group has been marked private, and all memberships must be approved by the moderator (i.e., "me").

If you are interested in participating, and are willing to put in the time and effort, I believe that we can create a technical specification from which a follow-on to OS/2 can be crafted.

This is not a project for the faint of heart, nor for the easily discouraged.

For those of you who are up to the task, welcome !

To subscribe to this group, send an email to

os2tcs-doc-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Innotek Font engine use may be possible in other apps

I had posted a question on InnoTek's support board http://ubb.innotek.de/ultimatebb.php asking for info on how to use their anti-aliased font engine with other applications ... Achim Hasenmueller of InnoTek responded with the following info:

"Our engine is 100% API compatible with PMGPI. All you have to do is import from FTGPI.DLL instead of PMGPI.DLL. Note that it will not work most likely as we have not tested anything besides Mozilla. Also, we will most likely not provide any support -- maybe on a best effort basis if the problem reports are meaningful and precise ..."
So it would appear it could be done ... The question I guess is "how" ... which I'll be looking into ...

Anyway, I figured the more people who know this the better chance someone might try it and get it working.

Firebird v0.6.1

It would appear that an updated MozillaFirebird [Moderator note: This is the web browser only project] is up:

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firebird/releases/0.6.1/contrib/MozillaFirebird-0.6.1-os2.zip

Hopefully this will address problems with coexistance with Thunderbird.
