ZTreeBold Beta v1.94a Now Available!

A new beta of ZTreeBold - v1.94a - is now available!

Finally ZTreeBold has been brought up to date with the multitude of enhancements that have gone into ZTreeWin over the past 10 months! I am hoping to avoid such a lag in updates in future, but you can rest assured that as long as there are ZTreeBold users like yourself out there that rely on the product, I am committed to supporting it.

There are a LOT of changes here this time. I would strongly suggest you start by reviewing the WHATSNEW.TXT file. One of the most significant improvements here is the support of more than 80 columns. Try Alt-F7 in a windowed session, and you'll never go back ;-)

Fresh "OS/2 flavored" website

This isn't meant to be an ad, so please don't take it as such. While it's still under development, the PC networking side of my website focuses mainly on just that: networking. However, there is a decidedly OS/2 slant to it, and I plan for extensive tips and technote sections, as well as several good whitepapers.

If you have a tip, technote, whitepaper (pdf is preferred, but I'll accept practically anything), or even a comment or criticism, please drop me a note.

FileCommander alpha

File Commander is a 32 bit text mode file manager and shell that allows you to locate, copy, move, delete, view, edit and execute your files in a quick, convenient and customizable manner.

It's main display provides dual directory view panels that may serve as source and destination of a copy or move operation or just two different views of your files. A panel may also be used to view a directory tree, drive statistics or may be turned off altogether, making visible the output of previously executed commands.

A command line is also provided and operates in conjuction with the directory panels to make it much more powerful than a regular CLI including pasting file names from the panel, a command history recall window and command completion from history.

Download File Commander for OS/2 v2.20. Download File Commander for Windows NT/2K/XP/9x v2.20. Main Features

* Long file name support
* Full support for volumes larger than 4GB.
* Online help.
* Many configuration options.
* Colourization of file and directory names by boolean expression.
* Built in file viewer with hex view mode.
* Built in editor with undo/redo and cut/copy/paste ability using the global clipboard.

o List all tagged files in the parameter list, automatically running the command multiple times if the command line gets too long.
* Directory history for changing back to recently viewed directories.

*) Fix menu colouring so that both forground & background of menu highlight bar can be configured.

*) Added TAB seek name completion

Changes with File Commander 2.21

*) Translate all paths passed to tar to use forward slashes as some tar ports can't understand backslashes.

*) Move hot key for Brief-Wide in Left/Right menus so as not to clash with Info item.

*) OS/2: Fix sort order of files with some country settings.

*) Fix rare crash in file contents searching where a negative offset into the file was requested when the first byte in the file was present in the search string.

MPGain 1.05

Marcel Mueller has released MPGain 1.05 (preliminary)

MPGain is a powerful utility to modify the real loudness of MP3 files automatically to one common level. It utilizes the psychoacoustic model of replaygain to do the loudness analysis. The modifications to the MP3 files are lossless (i.e. without any additional losses) and reversible. See the original homepages for further details.

The modification of the MP3 files is done in place and lossless.

The utility can operate on MPEG 1, MPEG 2 and MPEG 2.5 file Layer 3 only.

MPEG audio utility 0.23

MPEG audio utility 0.23 has been released by Marcel Mueller

This Utility analyzes all frames of MPEG-1, MPEG-2 or MPEG-2.5 audio files compressed with Layer I, II or III.

In case of Layer III files additionaly the gain (volume) may be modified. This is lossless. It is implemented by modifying all side info blocks of the file. This restricts the step size to 1.5 dB.

Furthermore Layer III files may be stripped. This means that leading and trailing silence (empty frames) is removed

New Version 0.23

* keep ID3 V2.x tags when stripping files

* data loss when /spositive integer without /l fixed

XWorkplace and WarpIN 0.9.19 released

After a long wait, WarpIN and XWorkplace have both been updated to V0.9.19.Br>

1. WarpIN V0.9.19 has been released.Br>

WarpIN is intended to become the new universal OS/2 installer. It is becoming more and more popular among OS/2 developers because of its flexibility and ease of use. It has full system configuration (CONFIG.SYS, WPS classes, WPS objects) and can fully undo all the changes to your system again.

V0.9.19 is a 100% bugfix release for the highly broken 0.9.18 version. Hopefully the Unicode support works now.

2. XWorkplace V0.9.19 is out also.

XWorkplace is the most feature-rich freeware Workplace Shell enhancer on the planet, and even better, it is OpenSource. XWorkplace is the successor to my popular XFolder utility and has become a Netlabs project.

For details, please refer to the download address below.

It's been a long while since V0.9.18, so this version has a lot of changes. There are only few new features though, since most of the time went into fixing earlier bugs. However, as usual, be reminded that this is not guaranteed to be stable (as the version number indicates anyway).

Note: To install XWorkplace, you also need WarpIN V0.9.14 or higher, since XWorkplace now comes as a self-installing executable. I recommend using at least WarpIN V0.9.16 to avoid the problem with your existing XCenter disappearing on install.

To get the new WarpIN and XWorkplace, please go to:

http://www.xworkplace.org

WarpIN and XWorkplace are Netlabs projects, released under the GNU General Public Licence. The source code is available on the Netlabs CVS server. See www.netlabs.org/nosa and the above address for details.

We have created four mailing lists at groups.yahoo.com:

-- warpin-user
-- warpin-dev
-- xworkplace-user
-- xworkplace-dev

for WarpIn and XWorkplace users and developers, respectively. HOWEVER, please note that I am currently not able to answer a hundred messages per day. If you want to report a bug, this is appreciated, but do not be disappointed if you do not get an answer. And please do not try either to mail me privately instead, that won't change things either. Thanks for your patience.

Have fun!

Ulrich Moeller

Apache 2.0.39 and PHP 4.2.1

Apache 2.0.36 and PHP 4.2.1 for OS/2 are available.

Apache is a web server. "With Apache Server v2.0 comes a serious reorganization of code that makes it much easier to take full advantage of a platform's features, especially non-unix platforms like OS/2. The enhancements that have so far been implemented in Apache for OS/2 v2.0 include

* Multi-threaded instead of multi-process for greatly reduced memory consumption and better performance.
* Bypassing of the EMX unix compatibility library for both file and network I/O by using OS/2 API calls directly for better performance.

Testing of the current development code shows the improvements over v1.3.9 as

* Close to double the connections per second.
* Less than 1/10th the memory consumption."

for users and developers of java under OS/2, i set this group up some time ago, but since my old computer was dying I left announcing it until now

Secondly I have set up a group to help users of Visual Age 3.*, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cplusplus2/ In particular I was hoping to get some discussion concerning the free stl libraries to install, as well as a forum for other issues

At present their is one link on the site but I was hopping to upload some make files later.

There are only about 3 months until the OS/2 event of the year, which will be held the weekend of October 5th and 6th, at the Renaissance Austin Hotel in Austin Texas.

We have heard your complaints and problems with last year's online payment methods and have contracted with Bank of America to act as our credit card processor. No additional fees, no questions about security for your transactions. Your VISA and MasterCard transaction will be processed securely via BOA merchant services.

Early registration for both days will be $70. This price is valid until 4 weeks prior to the event. After September 7th, registration will be $95 for the two day conference. A one day price of $70 is also available. But by registering early you get both Warp packed days for the price of a one day admission.
