June 6, 2003 - Some updates on our review of eComStation 1.1 Entry in last month's issue:
Concerning our statement that the eComStation 1.1 installer was contracted out to IBM, IBM was contracted only to provide training for the CID install process. The actual installer was written by Serenity and in part based on CID installer scripts from IBM.

Regarding our comments on the need for USB scanner support as well as the need for drivers for currently available printers, this past month has seen announcements that more USB scanners are being supported by SANE/Tame, as well as a new project to allow OS/2 to use win32 printer drivers.

There is now some limited support for a few Epson scanners in the latest beta of TAME, a front end for the SANE scanner driver. And now the developers are looking at supporting the HP 5400 and 5470 USB Scanners. If you are interested in testing this please contact Klaus Staedtler <staedtler-przyborskiDESPAM@web.de>. Be sure to remove the DESPAM.

The win32prn project is still in a very early stage of development, and the developer, Vit Timchishin, is looking for people to give him feedback. Contact him at <winprn32DESPAM@gtech-ua.com> for more information (Remove the DESPAM).

June 10, 2003 - Mark is happy to report that under eComStation 1.1 he now has sound working on his Medion Titanium M1 Notebook, (reviewed in the February 2003 issue). Using the RTL8139 driver installed under eCS 1.1, you can change the setting under MPTS to not use any IRQ. Now using the latest version of UNIAUD available on hobbes (uniaudio_104b_binaries.zip), the Realtek ALC/201 AC'97 chipset works. So everything other then the worthless winmodem is now working. Sound works well with System Sounds, WarpVision and Z! but at times it still stops completely. Even so it has improved the usefulness of this laptop computer under eCS considerably and now DVD's play under WarpVision with sound. :-)

June 12, 2003 - Regarding Tim Sipples' article on SBC Yahoo! DSL: It's My Turn Now in the June 2003 issue of the newsletter:

Dear Tim,

I'm really hoping you can help me out... you are my last hope : ). See I read your article http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0603H/vnewsf5.htm. I found it very interesting and I want some help. I really really don't want to install all those stupid adware things that yahoo SBC DSL is trying to make me do. I'm a DSL newbie. I've had 56K for four years haha, but anyway I also use Mozilla and I don't want to have to switch to that junky yahoo browser. Can you please explain to me how I can set up my connection without having to run the software installation??

Thanks again,
Anthony

Tim responded:
Dave:

I mention in my article that you can run DSLREG.EXE -- a Windows application, unfortunately -- to register. That seems to be the minimal way to get through the registration. You do it once, then you never have to do it again.

As for starting your DSL connection on bootup, that's pretty easy. The PPPoE client from F/X Communications can be added to your Startup folder, for example. (I recommend the text mode client for that, since it connects automatically.) Other PPPoE clients should be similar. (I should add ISDNPM to that list. It provides a PPPoE client, too. I neglected to mention that in my article, except in a roundabout way, i.e. eComStation.)

Hope that helps.
